Choosing to spay your dog can be a difficult decision. L’OVE makes it easier.

What is a L’OVE Spay?

A L’OVE Spay (Laparoscopic Ovariectomy) is a more compassionate method for spaying female dogs. This method of spaying helps reduce pain, internal bruising, inflammation, and recovery time so that you and your pet can get back to playtime in no time.

A L’OVE Spay uses the same advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques seen in human medicine, offering your pet the high standard of care they deserve. It’s safer, less painful, and far less stressful for both you and your furry friend.

Why L’OVE Spays are better

  • Is ideally suited for larger female dogs (usually weighing >15kg) who have gone through heat cycles or have had litters of puppies.

  • Is performed through two small incisions (5mm & 12mm) using laparoscopic equipment, which reduces trauma to your pet.

  • Uses a camera that provides a magnified view of internal structures on a monitor, improving surgical precision.

  • The ovarian ligament is carefully cut and cauterized with increased precision and care.

  • Significantly reduces pain, bleeding, and tissue trauma.

  • Allows for same-day home recovery and a return to normal activity in a fraction of the time.

L’OVE Spay

  • Involves a 5–10 cm incision through the skin and abdominal wall, which increases trauma to your pet.

  • The ovarian ligament is torn, causing internal bruising and inflammation.

  • Increases the risk of intraoperative bleeding and postoperative pain.

  • Requires up to 14 days of restricted activity and e-collar use.

 FAQs

  • For large breed dogs with a risk of stomach bloat and torsion (twisted stomach), the stomach can be tacked to the abdominal wall to prevent torsion. This surgery is called a gastropexy and can be performed at the same time as a Laparoscopic spay. Alternatively, if you have a male dog, this can be done as a standalone procedure, or at the same time as neutering.

Inquire with us or your veterinarian if you have a large breed dog to see if this procedure is right for your pet.

  • Incisions are small (with dissolving sutures), so most pets are back to on-leash walks the next day and off-leash walks after a week. We still require that your pet not lick the incision until it is healed (7-10 days), so a pet shirt or collar is usually required when your pet is left unattended or at night.

If a gastropexy surgery has been performed at the same time as a L’OVE spay, then healing will take a bit more time.

  • A L’OVE Spay will cost approximately $2000 + tax. Call or email Sea to Sky Veterinary Clinic to book or receive a quote.

  • Accompany your referral! For veterinarians who are curious about laparoscopic spays and gastropexies and are considering offering this service, why not scrub in and learn some of the techniques required? Learn how to safely and confidently perform a laparoscopic spay, and how they can remove the anxiety of traditional spays, allowing you to see all the blood vessels and when they are completely sealed.

Note that advanced notice is required to accompany your referral. You will be required to bring the necessary surgical attire (masks, gloves, surgical gowning, etc.) for learning.

We require all referrals to have had a veterinarian exam within 14 days of surgery (paying particular attention to signs of pyoderma on the abdomen). We also require pre-anesthetic blood work within a month of surgery. Forward exam and bloodwork to info@seatoskyvets.com.

All surgery records will be promptly emailed back to referring veterinarians.
